A BTC mixer or BTC tumbler is a mechanism that is used by users of Bitcoin to separate the transaction sender and receiver.

It is carried out by combining participants' coins in the general pool with other users' coins and the service's private funds. The method, although it takes some time to complete, is cheap and simple. Users themselves pick the delay period for most services and it can take 0 to a couple of hours for clean coins to be returned to the specified address.

The use of a third-party service to break the connection between a wallet address sending coins and the addresses receiving coins is known as bitcoin tumbling (mixing). Tumbling is the way to go if a person does not want the entire world to know where they received their money and/or to which addresses the Bitcoins are transmitted. Bitcoin Tumbling refers to a provider of Bitcoin tumbling services.

Prior to the introduction of trustworthy alternatives, mixing services (also known as tumblers) were used to mix one's assets with other people's money, obfuscating the path back to the assets' original source. Moving assets through banks in countries with severe bank-secrecy regulations would be equivalent in traditional financial frameworks.
